Cheltenham Welcomes Refugees (CWR) is made up of five committee groups with various focuses to create a more informed and welcoming Cheltenham community.
This group aims to give Cheltenham students a better understanding of the local and global refugee situation and to encourage them to consider what they can do to make the transitions for refugees easier. Assemblies and workshops have been presented to more than ten primary schools in the local area, and a similar number of secondary schools and colleges as well.
Cheltenham Volunteer Teachers organise weekly language classes, and have developed a mentorship scheme with local families, helping refugees to build on their conversational language skills.
Do you have teaching or presentation skills that might benefit our group? Email email@example.com for more information about getting involved.
Community Building Group
Volunteers put on the monthly Community Cafe event which brings together refugee families and Cheltenham locals to meet, eat, and practice English. They also coordinate one summer and one winter event each year. This group is often looking for free venues where they can host regular or one off community events. Group volunteers are also needed to help organise events, locate venues, resources etc.
Specifically, the group is in need of Community Cafe volunteers to help on the first Thursday of each month with general clear up, organising children’s games, and practicing English with families. You need to be positive, motivated and consistent, keen on helping with the event from beginning to end. If you are interested in supporting this group, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Media & Communications Group
A team of volunteers produce a monthly newsletter, manage the website and social media accounts, and tackle negative perceptions of refugees in the press.
Email Tabi at email@example.com if you have communications, media or marketing skills that could help this group.
Our volunteers make connections with interested people and groups in Cheltenham to build potential appropriate projects and future working groups.
Currently, the group is sourcing private sector housing for refugee families, which will supplement housing the council provides. Your help would involve putting together an information pack for property owners, getting in contact with landlords and letting agents, and connecting interested landlords to GARAS. The group recently created an information page on our website for landlords, which you can view here.
