Cheltenham Welcomes Refugees (CWR) is a local volunteer organisation that aims to ensure that refugee families in Cheltenham feel welcomed and supported.
We raise awareness about the refugee crisis and work to build an inclusive community through support of the resettlement process, education and campaigning. We work with schools to give assemblies, develop community awareness through regular public meetings and engagement, and seek to locate suitable housing for larger or single-person families, so that more people can be offered homes.
We also use various media channels to address myths and prejudices surrounding refugees, asylum seekers, and immigration issues, and try to act as a supportive voice for migration as a positive force for a resilient and happy society.
We also arrange monthly community cafe events to help families to meet up, have fun, and practice language skills, as well as annual summer picnics, and a full roster of National Refugee Week celebration events.
We’re in the process of working to make Cheltenham an official Town of Sanctuary, so watch this space!
